Jennifer Crawford

Jenny holds a BA (Psychology) with honours from the University of Sydney. For a period of time, Jenny worked as a tutor for the Department of Psychology at the University of Sydney, teaching introductory psychology and senior level social psychology.

In 1999, Jenny joined Eureka Strategic Research and became one of the Directors and owners of the business in 2003. She played a pivotal role in shaping the firm’s reputation as a leading provider of quality social and public health research. In 2007, Eureka was acquired by Ipsos, a global research firm that was seeking to strengthen its social and government research offering in Australia. Jenny then continued to work as a Director of the Ipsos-Eureka Social Research Institute until 2011.

Jenny’s published work spans an impressive array of public health topics. Over the years, she has presented research findings to ministers, ministerial advisers and bureaucrats at meetings in Parliament House, as well as to state and territory experts and stakeholders.

She won the George Camakaris best paper award at the 2003 AMSRS National Conference for her paper on research to inform the development of a campaign designed to minimise young children’s exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in the home and car. In fact, she was invited as a keynote speaker at the National Seminar on Smoking in the Home in Glasgow in 2008, where she presented a paper about the lessons that could be learnt from this successful campaign.

Jenny is a member of the Public Health Association of Australia and The Research Society (formerly AMSRS). She holds QPR accreditation. She was the Deputy Chair of the NSW Division of AMSRS between 2002 and 2006, taking over as Chair in 2006, and she also chaired the 2007 National Conference.

John Sergeant

John has, until recently, taught research methods within the Business School at the University of Sydney. He has worked in research for over twenty-five years. He was formerly the head of the Public Affairs Division for Ipsos Australia which, at the time, was the largest supplier of social research in Australia, with the Commonwealth as its major client. Prior to that, he set up Eureka Strategic Research and managed it successfully until its acquisition by Ipsos early in 2007.

John was President of AMSRS (the professional association, now known as The Research Society) from 2000 to 2004, leading a number of changes to the research profession in the areas of ethics, privacy, professional accreditation and quality assurance. He was subsequently elected as the youngest-ever Fellow of the Society and received the NSW Consumer Protection Award for his services to research participants’ privacy.

For ten years, John was the Vice Principal of St Andrew’s College, within the University of Sydney. He has also worked as the Principal Behavioural Scientist at the NSW Centre for Road Safety.

John holds a BSc in biological sciences and a BA with first class honours in Psychology, both from the University of Sydney, where he was until recently the Honorary Treasurer of the Chancellor’s Committee. His research interests include road safety, public health, social welfare, taxation, electoral matters and education.

John is available for speaking engagements, expert testimony and statistical consulting. He is also a director of two public companies, unrelated to social research.
